Geo Science Laboratories – Islamabad

Establishing Pakistan’s Premier Geoscience Research Infrastructure

Geo Science Labs - Islamabad

Project Overview

PECT Private Limited’s contribution to the GEO Science Laboratories (now Geoscience Advanced Research Laboratory – GARL) represents a foundational achievement marking both the company’s establishment and Pakistan’s advancement in geological research capacity. This Japanese Grant Aid project, implemented in 1991-92, united Tobishima Corporation (main contractor), Yamashita Consultants (design), Sumitomo Corporation (equipment – PKR 0.75 million component), and PECT for laboratory equipment installation and MEP systems.

Coinciding with PECT’s 1991 founding, this project established the company’s three-decade legacy of Japanese-Pakistani cooperation on Grant Aid initiatives. The facility enabled Pakistan’s Geological Survey to conduct world-class research in petrology, geochemistry, paleomagnetism, and geophysics—advancing national mineral exploration and geological knowledge with lasting scientific and economic impact.

Project Details

Project Name: GEO Science Laboratory

Brief Description: Japanese Grant Aid project establishing Pakistan’s premier geoscience research facility with advanced analytical equipment and precision environmental controls.

Project Description: PECT Private Limited contributed laboratory equipment installation expertise to the GEO Science Laboratories constructed in 1991-92 for the Geological Survey of Pakistan in Islamabad’s Shahzad Town. The Japanese Grant Aid project, implemented through partnership between Tobishima Corporation (main contractor), Yamashita Consultants (design consultants), and Sumitomo Corporation (equipment contractor with PKR 0.75 million component value), represented a landmark investment in Pakistan’s geological research capacity.

The project coincided with significant GSP expansion including the 1992 discovery of Thar Desert coal deposits and Asian Development Bank sponsorship of a 10-year, multibillion-dollar mineral exploration program. The laboratory facility supported GSP’s core research functions: petrology-mineralogy including igneous/metamorphic petrography and ore microscopy; geochemistry for rock, mineral, water, and coal sample analysis; paleomagnetic studies analyzing rock-magnetic properties; geophysical analysis supporting mineral and groundwater studies; geological specimen curation and storage; and research publications.

Create an unconventional yet user-friendly website – innovative, with a clean and simple design that communicates brand values and showcases multi-media content. Site that spreads the message: “Islamic stories your child will love”

Solution

Our approach was to present the site as a visual editorial platform with quarterly features based on events and occasions the brand was focused on. Each quarterly focus would be marked by the hero and custom tags that filter content.
